The Environmental Art Exhibition Entitled Earthworks

Nature has always been an inspiration for many artists, mostly represented in paintings and drawings of landscapes. Since the 1960s until nowadays, the meanings of the concept of ecology have been changing a lot due to the introduction of new ways of artistic expression and the growing concern about the ecological issues. This ultimately resulted in the debates about the role of art in ecology- should artists take some actions towards solving some of the ecological issues? The transition and debates are being discussed regarding the examples of Robert Smithson’s and Tattfoo Tan’s work. What is ecology? According to Jacob Weiner (1998), it has two meanings: attitude to the environmental issues and a scientific field- area of biology that deals with abundance and distribution of organisms. This is a very broad definition of ecology, although it does summarise the two main concepts of it that are constantly being reflected by artists in various ways, bringing new meanings to these concepts. The first environmental art exhibition entitled â€Å"Earthworks† was directed in October 1968 by Thomas W. Leavitt. That is about the time when the landscape art movement emerged, with its goals to liberate art from the galleries and museums, to take the artistic practice outdoors- into ‘natural’ or relatively untouched spaces in one sense, but also into neglected areas such as tree ways, industrial riversides and despoiled and polluted sites.
